Jim O’Brien is our lead architect and interior designer. Having never been afraid to get his hands dirty, to climb to the top of any half-finished building to see what it’s made of, Jim deploys his freehand drawing ability, great taste, and deep technical knowledge without the ego that accompanies many of his peers. Nearly everyone we meet finds Jim likeable (jokingly we say he is “user friendly.”) Most clients never encounter a better and more detail oriented architect or interior designer. A residential house framer when working his way through architecture & design school, Jim holds a PhD in the History, Theory and Criticism of Art and Architecture. With an education in both the classics and modernism Jim interacts seamlessly with others without the self-importance that can accompany many of his peers.
The firm is a collaborative team of architects and designers bringing strong insights and design skills to residential estates, vacation homes and country houses, as well as urban flats and townhouses. Our portfolio shows our necessary flexibility enables us to work exceptionally well in an array of styles from pure classicism, to transitional and modern design, to those informal yet traditional country styles.
Our strengths are our ability to listen as well as to lead, our collective imagination, our sense of balance and proportion about all things spatial, our timely execution of creative alternatives, and our regimented construction contractor- and project schedule-management.
We are certified nationally (through NCARB) for architectural licensing in all 50 States, Canada, The United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and elsewhere. We are comfortable researching building products and materials local to your site and managing a local builder in the US & abroad.
On both the west and east coast we have the resource of trusted builders of high-end homes to consult with and develop budget pricing for your project. Collectively we have an encyclopedic knowledge of construction practices, a phenomenal rolodex of builders, suppliers and vendors in the US and abroad, and a deep history of supporting our clients from one generation to the next.
